some
and addicting to others. When you come over Brockway summit and see the
sapphire blue of Crystal Bay and stare out at the scenic wonder of Crystal
Bay, you can’t help feeling connected to the beauty and centered within
yourself. The minute you feel that sensation, you will never shed its
overwhelming affects. Crystal Bay will win your heart.
Crystal Bay Real Estate for Lake Tahoe Nevada
Our area is rich in outdoor recreational activities and
the lives of many Crystal Bay residents revolve around athletic endeavors.
Whether you are a conditioned athlete, a weekend warrior or a couch
potato, there are many levels on which you can participate. Summer gives
us boating, hiking, golfing and biking. Winter gives us skiing,
snowshoeing, and snow mobiling. In any event, there are some "rituals" you
will need to know when living at Crystal Bay.
The first to remember is that we sit at altitude. That means we tend to be
close to the sun. Any of you who have vacationed in Mexico or Hawaii or
the Caribbean know the cruel effects the sun can have on you the first day
on the beach. No one would ever think that sitting on the beach on a cool
spring day in Crystal Bay would produce a nasty sunburn. But, being at
over 6000 feet, you will quickly learn to bring the sun screen and apply
it liberally.
In addition to being closer to the sun, it also makes the air thinner.
Most of us, even those conditioned athletes, experience shortness of
breath. No, you’re probably not that out of shape, it is most definitely
easier to breath at sea level.
Altitude also brings with it huge temperature swings from night to day and
also snow in the winter. I lived in the Chicago area for a good part of my
life and experienced cold and bitter winters with plenty of the white
stuff. I vowed that I would never live in a winter climate again. But here
I am. Its funny what scenic beauty can do.
Snow is the main reason a lot of us live here. It provides recreational
pursuits such as skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. But winter snow
also provides a challenge to first year residents on how to get rid of it
and how to drive in it.
If you own or rent a home, a snow blower or plow service is a must. The
Sierra storms can dump large amounts of snow, sometimes measured in feet,
and it is important to keep up. It can be a daunting task to some with
large, sloped driveways or decks. But within a few hours, the storm will
let up, your plowing will be complete and you are left to enjoy
recreational pursuits the storm has provided. One word of warning—when
plowing your driveway, remember that some things (like delivered
newspapers) can be lurking under the snow and can do real damage to your
snow blower. A moment of reflection as to the day of week can really help
you save time and dollars.
Winter driving can also provide you with excitement your first year here.
If you have never lived in snow, driving on it can cause a few unraveled
nerves, especially when you combine that with going up and down hills.
Going down a steep hill sideways is not a good way to start a day. Believe
me, I know. Even four-wheel drive vehicles can slide and get stuck. The
idea is to slow down. Take it easy. Remember, you’re on Crystal Bay Time.
My
favorite time of year is the seasons that the tourists forget. Our local
economy depends a good deal on the tourist trade. But to the tourist,
Crystal Bay has two seasons—winter and summer. Winter begins when the ski
resorts open, usually around Christmas week and ends around Easter. Summer
begins with the July Fourth weekend and ends at Labor Day weekend. The
remaining parts of the year are called "lap seasons" or "shoulder
seasons." To those of us who live here, the lap seasons provide some of
the most pleasant weather and a less crowded environment, especially in
fall. Although autumn in Crystal Bay is not as spectacular as New
England’s, it can provide electric colors and clean fresh air.
Yes, you live in a rural resort area, but you haven’t left behind the
sophistication of great dining and entertainment. Crystal Bay delivers
both. And, what you have gained is a small town feeling of community in a
beautiful environment. Enjoy life here, because as Socrates states, good
life is to be chiefly valued.
